If we learned anything from the Frankfurt Auto Show in the past, it’s that we can anticipate some pretty cool cars for the next year. 2017 offered no exception to the rule. Everything from sleek sports cars to super luxury vehicles that cost more than most auto lovers will ever earn in their lives made appearances. Yet one of this year’s standout vehicles happened to be a small SUV in an affordable price range—the Ford EcoSport. Sure, Ford unveiled this car last year at the LA Motor Show; but the reveal of a European version reminded us Americans just how great this car is. Let’s take a deeper look at some of the changes Americans can expect in the 2018 Ford EcoSport.
Under the Hood
First things first.: the 2018 EcoSport promises some strong performance for an SUV of its size. The American version will ship with an option of at least two different engines. The first is the 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder EcoBoost motor. While Ford has not unveiled too many details as of yet, we do know that this model will offer 124 hp, which is plenty of power for a lightweight SUV. Ford also revealed that this version will ship with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The upgraded model includes a 2.0-liter petrol engine. This version will offer all-wheel-drive to its drivers. Ford also mentioned the car will receive around 138 hp, which offers a slight enhancement from the 1.0 liter model.
European and Indian versions of the EcoSport will also come in Diesel engine options. So far, Ford mentioned nothing about this motor arriving for North American models, so don’t get your hopes up too high yet for a diesel engine. However, knowing Ford, it’s likely that future models will offer this option at some point for those looking for improved fuel economy.
The improvements to the 2018 EcoSport occur in more places than the engine. For starters, this vehicle now has a sleeker appearance. Instead of the classic split grille, the 2018 model offers a larger grille with mustang-esque headlights. The SUV also added some fog lamps for improved visibility as well.
Other design changes include a sleeker appearing bumper and a new look to taillights. The upgraded version will even offer a more defined bumper and 17-inch alloy wheels for a more powerful look.
Moving into the cabin, the design only gets better. Everything seems to mimic the recent Ford Fiesta. The steering wheel and gearstick each offer a sporty appearance. As far as trim options go, the US version offers four different choices—S, SE, SES, and Titanium. The SES version will even offer a different suspension and steering setup for stronger performance.
The 2018 EcoSport will also offer the Sync3 infotainment system. The base model offers a 4.2-inch screen with USB and Bluetooth options. However, larger screens up to eight inches are also available.
Of course, no car is complete without some stellar safety features. Ford equips its 2018 EcoSport with all the modern essentials. A backup rear-view camera helps avoid parking lot accidents. Meanwhile, the option to add blind spot detection technology allows for safer merges on streets and highways. The SE model will even offer reverse sensing features.
The Bottom Line
Overall, the 2018 Ford EcoSport is shaping up to become one of the year’s most anticipated cars. Ford definitely took some notes with its previous models and looks to offer one of the best small SUVs the automotive market can offer. From here, we can only wait to hear how the American manufacturer plans to make the car even better with some of its unannounced specs.
