In 1984, Mustang released their limited- edition Mustang SVO. At the time, it was almost a complete reinvention of the Mustang. Able to generate 205 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, it wasn’t just considered one of the fastest and most expensive Mustangs in the market for that time; it was considered one of the most powerful American cars in general. In fact, the turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder found in the Mustang SVO was just as powerful as the V8-powered Mustang GT back in the day. But just two short years after the introduction of the Mustang SVO, in 1986, Ford ceased production of this vehicle. Until now that is.
There have been speculations that Ford may still bring back the SVO name for a future iteration of the Mustang, based on a comment from a Ford spokesperson upon the unveiling of the new 2.3L High Performance Package for the Mustang EcoBoost at the 2019 New York Auto Show. This High Performance Package is capable of delivering 330 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. This is a 20 hp increase over the standard EcoBoost, enabling the High Performance Mustang to achieve 0-60 in roughly 4.5 seconds, and making it 34 mph faster than the base model. With this new performance package, drivers will now be able to reach top speeds of 155 mph. All in all, this makes the new Mustang EcoBoost the most powerful four-cylinder sports car by an American automaker in the market today.
It didn’t take long for Ford enthusiasts to note the similarities between the 1980’s 2.3L Mustang SVO, and this new 2.3L High Performance Package. But when asked why the SVO name wasn’t used, a Ford spokesperson only said, “not this one.” This has led to all of us here at Team Ford and all Ford enthusiasts across the world to believe that there may be something in the works worthy enough to sport the SVO name.
While we wait, there are still plenty of more than worthy Mustangs in the market today: the 2019 Mustang Bullit, the EcoBoost, the GT Fastback, as well as the Shelby GT350. In fact, Mustang was named J.D. Power’s 2018 winner of the Highest Ranked Midsize Sporty Car in Initial Quality. Plus you can now not only get FordPass, but also Ford + Alexa with your Mustang, so you can stay connected anywhere and everywhere.
