Ford hybrid van trial expands to Valenica, Spain as next market

In today’s automotive landscape, there is a constant struggle between vehicle efficiency and being environmentally friendly. Nearly every manufacturer has tackled this in some shape or form, from readily accessible hybrid vehicles to prototypes that drum up Hollywood’s images of the future.

Ford, which has dipped its toes into the above arena at multiple levels, is also conducting an international trial of a plug-in hybrid van – the Transit Custom PHEV, with a production goal of sometime in 2019. The prototypes of these vans can go up to 31 miles in all-electric mode and are equipped with a 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine serving as a range extender.

Now, after less than a year of trials in London, the automaker has announced an expansion of the project – to Valencia, Spain.

“At Ford, we are committed to tackling urban mobility challenges, moving people and delivering goods and services through innovation and technology,” said Steven Armstrong, president and CEO, Ford of Europe, Middle East & Africa said in a press release. “As no two cities are alike, it is vital that we look at the mobility issue from a variety of perspectives. Our research in Valencia will help us gain a meaningful understanding of the benefits that small and medium fleets running primarily on electric power can bring.”

The focus of the Valencia trials will be more regarding the use of small and medium fleets of Transit Custom PHEV’s that are driven solely by an electronic motor with a zero-emission target range of more than 31 miles.

The production of the PHEV is just one sliver of an $11 billion spend by Ford to introduce 40 new electrified vehicles by 2022, including 16 pure battery-electric vehicles. Hybrid versions of the F-150 pickup truck, Mustang, Escape, Explorer, and Bronco SUVs are also expected to be part of this changeover. Two hybridized police pursuit vehicles and a 300-mile battery-electric SUV have also been previously announced by Ford.

Here are a few interesting facts about the Ford Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid:

  • The van can be plugged in to recharge overnight, or whenever it is not in use.
  • Each vehicle has a single, standard charging point, just in front of the right rear tire.
  • The PHEV boasts zero-emission electric power for city use.
  • The Electric Range, 31 miles, is perfect for a typical city trip – or short, daily commute
  • A combustion engine is also included under the hood for longer, extended range trips

As Ford continues to expand its energy efficient lineup of vehicles, it’s clear that renewable, environmentally-friendly energy is a top priority for America’s manufacturer.
